Le Crush est trés l'étrange....non?

So one of the newest blogs to hit the scene, hard, is a very strange one indeed. It is a list, updated daily, of 100 cute/attractive boys/men in South Africa. Not the Colin what'sisface or that guy from the Parlotones mainstream GQ list type of list, oh no...this is coming from inside the ranks.... I've not been in the country for about two years and the limited and subjective Facebook contact has put me fairly out of the loop of who's who, with whom, and where- but this list, along with the repetitive and self-congratulatory we-are-awesome is testament to the fact that Cape Town elitism and the bizarre mind set of the scenesters is alive and well - and mighty entertaining!
The Le Crush 100 blog sure has created quite the stir in just over two weeks. Folks are lashing out at the mean spirited way in which the author approaches some of the boys (Mr Cronjé) and the siblings of others (Will Venter), but one thing is for sure - this girl has got guts. I for one am interested in seeing who makes the top 100 ... and to witness the catfights that ensue.
An interview posted with photographer Natasja Fourie a few weeks ago on e-zine Mahala, solicited some fierce, very personally aimed and unfair commentary on her work (actually, on her person) and re-affirmed what it means to be cool in the Cape- they have to choose you. I found it interesting in following the comments posted to the article, that the comments were catty and based on very little actual art knowledge- they were attacking the person, or the perception of the person, instead of offering a critique of her work. Not ayoba.
It's interesting indeed to be back in town, and eye-opening how small it actually is.
